Foundation Work - Final Project

For my Final Project, i deceided to look at corsets, looked into the histrory behind them, and how they held and restricted women.  I then thought of them as a armer to protect people, which then lead to me thinking of what people keep back and hide from face value for instance, friends, family and past experience.   To what people show to everyone else.

Creating a corset out of mod-rock and chicken wire, i created a corset, with a front and to back sections, allowing people to what people show on the outside compared to the inside.

Using sheer fabrics and velvet, in rich colours, layering these together and also using a mixture of different textile techniques, from stitching, burning and trapping fabric between two layers.

For the inside I used pictures of me and my sister when we were younger and of pictures of me and my firends, with saying sayings about memories, friendship and laughter.  Again i used a mixture of different techniques and materials to create a collection of memories about me.

Foundation Work - Textile

I started to look at more natural elements and started to draw flowers and paint them in gouache.

Moving these drawings into an actual project i decided to look at the hippy era and flower power and look at there textile techniques to use as influences within my own textile work.  Using a mixture of techniques, dying fabrics, layering, paper, stitching, felting, plastic bags and beading.

Using left over fabric, yarn, paper, plastic, felting wool, and beads i creating a mix media weave, creating a textured and mixed surface.

After really enjoying learning how to felt, i created a patchwork felt piece as my final item for this project, taking colours and patterns, and using an embellisor to add detail with extra felted yarn and thread and to each section together.  I also made my own felted beads and added beads to add detail.

Foundation Work - Textures

As i had been doing alot of textured drawings, i started to go out and find my own textures,  i really enjoyed natural things so i went to the beach and took photos on logs, and pebbles.  I then used sections of these pictures and used different medias and textiles methods to experiment with textures and surfaces.

From these i decided to created textures images using wadding and calico, and then using different stitch and materials to create depth to my work, and represent the marks and textures i had found in my photographs.

Foundation Work - Textured Painting

I created lots of abstract art work, creating textured surfaces by layering paper, or layering different coloured acrylic paint, sanding away the different layers, once dry to reveal the different colours.  I also dragged acrylic paint over the textured surfaces.

Foundation Work - Drawing

While doing my Pre-Degree Foundation Work, i started off doing lots of drawing and still life, experimenting with different medias pencil, and graphite pencil, acrylic and gouache.

Using a mixture of different items such as, wire, cans, fabric and yarn i created a hand made textured woven structured, which i then painted in gouache, following this i then made a more abstract version of it and used mark making and ripped papers to represent it.
